Home Games vs. Away Games: Why Your VDP Still Wins

Shoppers visit 4+ sites before buying, some via AI tools. Carvia keeps them answered on your VDP, the tool behind a 75% lead form lift for Lavery Automotive.

The two games every shopper plays

Every GM I talk to is already playing this game. Most just haven't put a name on it.

A home game is any moment a shopper is looking at your VDP: your inventory, your photos, your pricing, your domain. You control what they see and what happens after. An away game is everywhere else that same shopper goes to get the answer your page didn't give them: CarGurus, Autotrader, a Facebook group, a Google AI Overview, increasingly ChatGPT or Perplexity.

Away games aren't the enemy. Third-party sites aren't going anywhere, and dealers shouldn't try to make them go away. The problem is how much of the actual decision-making happens off your site instead of on it, and how little of that you can see or influence once a shopper leaves.

02

The away-game list just got longer

The research backs up what most GMs already feel. Industry data compiled across Cox Automotive, J.D. Power, and McKinsey studies puts the average shopper at 4.1 websites visited and 72% using a third-party site somewhere in the process before they buy.

And the list of away games is growing. In Cox Automotive's 2025 Car Buyer Journey Study, released this past January, 19% of all buyers and 25% of new-vehicle buyers said they used an AI tool such as ChatGPT or a Google AI Overview somewhere in their research. That's a new away game most dealers have zero visibility into. You can't see what an AI Overview told a shopper about your inventory, and you can't correct it if it's wrong.

What losing a home game actually costs you

Here's the part that should bother you more than the traffic split. You already paid for the home field. You built the VDP, you're paying for the traffic that lands on it, and a large share of the real decision still happens somewhere you don't own, can't brand, and can't measure.

I hear some version of the same frustration on almost every GM or marketing manager call: you don't know what happens to a shopper once they leave your site. That's the real cost of a lost home game. It's not just the lead you didn't get. It's the ones you lose without ever finding out why.

04

Why the VDP is the highest-leverage home game you have

This is the reason Carvia sits directly on the VDP instead of somewhere upstream in the funnel. A shopper already on your VDP has intent. They picked your inventory over a competitor's. The job at that moment is to keep answering their questions right there instead of sending them off to find the answer somewhere else.

That's what the tool does. It decodes the VIN and puts trim, packages, and ownership context into plain language on the page. It answers the specific buyer questions that used to send someone off to a forum or a third-party history report. And it surfaces fit and engagement signals back to your team, including early F&I intent, before the shopper ever picks up the phone or fills out a form.

05

What actually moved the needle

Two results worth sharing, because a general claim doesn't mean much in this industry and a specific one does.

Lavery Automotive installed Carvia on their VDP in February 2026. In a matched pre and post GA4 window, lead form submissions went from 12 to 21, a 75% increase, and session duration on the VDP went from 92.5 seconds to 132 seconds. Conversions rose 20% in the first 30 days.

Heiser Ford saw median session duration move from 83.9 to 110.2 seconds after install, on a site that was already performing well above the industry average. That's a harder number to move than a struggling one, which is exactly why it's worth paying attention to.

Neither of those is a projection. Both are matched pre and post comparisons, the same methodology we'd run on your account, so the number holds up when you show it to ownership.

06

The plan

It's a three-step install, not a rebuild.

  1. Install the tool on your VDP. Live in days, no site rebuild required.
  2. Shoppers get real answers on the page: pricing context, ownership history, and fit guidance, before they bounce to a third-party site or an AI Overview.
  3. We measure the lift with a matched pre and post GA4 window, the same method behind the Lavery Automotive and Heiser Ford numbers.

07

One next step

Away games aren't going away, and a dealer that ignores CarGurus or Autotrader is making a mistake in the other direction. But the home game is the one moment in the entire buying journey where you control the page, the data, and the follow-up, and it's the one most dealers are underusing.

If a shopper leaves your VDP with a real question unanswered, that's not a marketing problem. It's a page problem, and it's fixable.
